If a special travel genie granted the chance to go anywhere in the world for the weekend, Newport Folk Festival would have to be the runaway choice. Hyperboles aside, seriously, get me to Rhode Island! Newport has managed to balance some of that festival sponsorship $$ while staying true to the organic roots music and beachfront stages it has become renowned for. Newport Folk has impressive history worth familiarizing and its 2014 lineup is off the charts.
The real envy of these festival goers revolves around the notorious after parties at the Newport Blues Café hosted by Rhode Island heroes/festival mainstays, Deer Tick. Going on the 4th annual installment, these parties have grown in legend. The after parties start well after the last set at the actual festival and feature even more surprises than a typical Deer Tick show. They have been known to play specific albums in full, covers, stunts involving beer bottles and invite special friends in the likes of Jackson Browne, Dawes, M.Ward, Jason Isbell, Jim James, Sharon Van Etten, Johnny Fritz, Felice Brothers, Justin Townes Earle, Langhorne Slim, and others. They play all three nights of the festival and take on somewhat of a house band identity. Each night has something special to offer. This year’s (known) guests include, Caitlin Rose, Hamilton Leithauser of The Walkmen, Trampled by Turtles, T. Hardy Morris of Dead Confederate & Robert Ellis. These shows sell out at lightspeed and all proceeds to to charity.
**Also, its ALWAYS fun to see Father John Misty weird people out
