With three solo records to his name, Mikal Cronin has spent the better part of his time touring with Ty Segall and recording as a vital member of The Freedom Band since 2009. As you would imagine, having Ty Segall as a friend and creative partner will keep you busy as hell, but the group always finds time and came together in Idylwild, California to record Cronin’s new solo record, Seeker.
Now backed by the Freedom band, which includes Segall, Emmett Kelly of Cairo Gang and drummer Charles Moothart, Cronin took the reigns with producer Jason Quever. Cronin was facing a bout of writer’s block, but listening to Seeker, you would’t be able to tell. Isolation and meticulous detail to recording and natural peace helped Cronin find a moment of clarity and as a result, Seeker speaks to the continuous quest of answering life’s inevitable mysteries like nature and death. It’s fully of classic guitar riffs and pop piano chords, but Cronin and the guys still find room to get loud, like on the track I’ve Got Reason.
Seeker is a beautifully longing record, and yet an easy listening rock n roll album that sounds like it could have been recorded in any of the last 20 years.
