MAYER HAWTHORNE MIXES A “MESSAGE FROM THE SOUL SISTERS

By Colin Dierckins

Beginning his career as a hip-hop DJ known as DJ Haircut, Mayer Hawthorne knows a thing or two about soul music. Back in the day after he found that getting the soul samples he wanted to get cleared challenging, Hawthorne took to writing and singing his own music. This caught the ear of Stones Throw‘s Peanut Butter Wolf, and rest is history.

One could argue that his ear for classic soul music formed the foundation for what is now a very successful career. Hawthorne has released three full length solo albums and is one-half of the funk band, Tuxedo, currently on tour. With a new solo album in the works, it’s a wonder that Hawthorne has time to dig through crates of classic records to find and compile sets like his most recent, Message From The Soul Sisters. This 45 minute mix is dripping with heartache, regret, and love proclamations from the leading ladies of soul.
