Despite its compact, 25 minute run time, Monophonics new EP, Mirrors, delivers the punch as a great soul/funk collection. The psychedelic Bay Area outfit selected 6 relatively obscure tunes to give the Monophonics treatment to.
Lead by keyboard and vocalist Kelly Finnegan, the group has become known as one of the best live soul bands in the country. As a mostly instrumental record, they let guests like Tiffany Austin and Adryon de Leon sing on a couple of tunes, while the band let it rip behind them. Records comprised of covers, when done well, can provide a glimpse into the ear and brain of the group, and Mirrors does just that.
Listening to Mirrors, it’s apparent where Monophonics found their perfect blend of psych-rock, soul and funk.
