Even for as much credit and trust Jason Isbell has deservedly built up, when he wrapped up tracking Something More Than Free in the studio and tweeted something along the lines of, “this batch of songs may be better than Southeastern,” it would give most people reason to go, “ehh…I don’t know, that record was pretty damn good.” Not only was Southeastern award winning/critically acclaimed/overall fantastic record, but it was some of the best songwriting to date.

Isbell’s knack for storytelling, heartbreak and southern culture mixes perfectly with his smooth voice over guitars and his wife, Amanda Shire’s violin.

It turns out, Jason Isbell might just that good. Something More Than Free, truly may be even better than Southeastern. That debate can take place in 10 or 15 years from now, but right now, we should just enjoy a man who was already an incredible writer, in his prime.
