CHARLEY CROCKETT DUSTS OFF SOME DUSTY CLASSICS YET AGAIN

By Ian Bremner

Like a true modern troubadour, if you got some songs to sing, put it on a record and hit the road again. Fresh off the heels of Lonesome As A Shadow, Charley Crockett dropped his 2nd record of the year called Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza.

It’s the 2nd installment of the Lil G.L.’s series, which follows last year’s Honky Tonk Jubilee. Crockett takes his role as a torch-carrier seriously by paying homage to the dusty record bins of lost country and blues classics. Paying dues and singing the blues by busking the streets for years, even before his first record, Crockett has never quite stopped touring since. The excellent Lonesome As A Shadow (one of Old Rookie’s 60 best records of the year) was a bit of breakthrough album of sorts, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by the way Crockett just keeps pushing forward.

Blue Bonanza is a lovely collection of cover tunes that he and his band The Blue Drifters provide their own spin on. The record is already a success in terms of Crockett’s growing catalog and long term plan; travel the country playing songs and getting those legs wiggling.
