By Ian Bremner
Beyond The Bloodhounds is an ode to Adia Victoria’s 20s. Her debut album is out May 13th and it follows the artist from New York to Nashville, living as a young, “mad black woman antagonist.”
Victoria has a distinct harrowing voice that is both powerful and creepy. Her lyrics are dark, but personally truthful. She is a poet at heart and uses the guitar as a means to speak. Kurt Cobain comparisons get thrown out there a lot, but he and Adia undoubtedly share some of the same make up.. and demons, perhaps.
The 3-song Sea Of Sand EP was a nice teaser for music fans, and the upcoming album appears to elaborate on that same sound. Victoria is a part of a strong local Nashville scene of women songwriters pointing out the injustices in the world with both gender and race. She has played with Those Darlins and Hurray For The Riff Raff, both of whom are known for their unique voices in southern rock ‘n roll. All of these women lend more than their fantastic music and art to world, their story and message.
